Sliding Security Gates vs Swing Gates – Which is right for your site?

Keeping business premises, assets and employees secure is a top priority for any business owner. When it comes to selecting perimeter security measures, you may be wondering which option is better: sliding security gates or swing gates.
In this guide, we’ll be exploring the pros and cons of both, and discussing some of the things you should consider when choosing the right solution for your business, helping you to make an informed decision.
Why Install Gates on Your Business Premises?
Security gates can act as a robust primary barrier against unauthorised access to your property. By regulating entry and exit, you can considerably reduce the possibility of theft and other security breaches.
This is especially crucial for businesses that stock high-value equipment, materials, or merchandise on their premises. Here are some of the ways in which security gates protect your business premises.
Deterrent Against Crime
Gates can function as a physical barrier that discourages potential thieves from trying to infiltrate your property, which, in turn, minimises your business’s susceptibility to theft and other criminal activities.
Controlling Access
Gates provide you with the ability to regulate who has permission to enter and exit your property. By restricting access solely to authorised personnel and vehicles, you can increase the difficulty of entry for potential burglars.
Additionally, gates prevent vehicles from entering or approaching your building, making it more challenging for thieves to make a swift getaway with your business’s valuable assets.
Privacy
Gates provide privacy for your company by prohibiting outsiders from peering into your business and its operations. Consequently, this prevents them from gaining any insight into your valuable assets, reducing the risk of your business being targeted by thieves.
Reduce Business Insurance Costs
Installing Perimeter security may significantly reduce the cost of your business insurance. By safeguarding your premises with gates, you can decrease your liability in the event of theft or other incidents that may occur on your property.
Sliding Gates
Sliding gates are dependable and low maintenance choice. They are especially suitable for small and large industrial sites that demand a swift and seamless opening to allow authorised vehicles to enter and exit efficiently.
Pros of Sliding Gates
- Compact – Sliding gates require very little room compared to swing gates.
- Offer a more contemporary look
- Suitable for sloped or uneven ground
Cons of Sliding Gates
- More complex components than swing gates
- More expensive as a result
- Require more maintenance
Sliding Gates at BID Group Ltd
At BID Group Ltd, our sliding gates are available in either cantilever or tracker versions, accommodating spans of up to 10 metres to suit your business premises’ needs.
Many businesses prefer cantilever models, as they are supported from one side of the opening, eliminating the need for tracks to be cut into the road surface and therefore reducing cost and maintenance.
Our 9000A Automatic Cantilever Sliding Gate complies with BS/EN 12453 and is controlled by a German Feig control pane via an integrated frequency converter controlled output to a 3 phase motor.
This can be easily configured for all the standard program modes, including no passage time outs & free exit and entry loops to name a few.
As standard the control panel can accommodate pedestrian open signals, airlock systems and much more. The gate’s movement is controlled via a rack & pinion system monitored by an encoder, allowing for a precise and controlled operation that is robust and dependable.
Our gates are delivered on a vehicle equipped with a crane, fully assembled, ready to bolt down continuing our “plug & play” ethos. This minimises disruption on site and ensures a smooth, quick and easy installation. We have developed the gate using aluminium construction with its obvious anti-corrosion properties.
Swing Gates
Swing gates are BS/EN 12453 compliant and are ideal for businesses that have more space to work with on their premises. They are suitable for openings of up to 10 metres in double leaf configuration, opening to a maximum of 90º.Swing gates can be supplied with either underground or face fixed ‘Ram’ type operators.
Pros of Swing Gates
- Low cost
- Low maintenance
- Quieter than sliding gates
- Suitable for narrow openings
Cons of Swing Gates
- Require more space in order to swing open
- Not suitable for slopes or uneven ground

Things to Consider When Choosing Between Sliding Gates and Swing Gates
Cost
One of your primary considerations when choosing security gates for businesses should be the cost. Make sure to think about your budget, and think not only about the initial cost of purchasing, but also the cost of maintenance and servicing.
Generally, sliding gates are more expensive to install and maintain than swing gates. This is because they require a more complex mechanism and have more parts, such as the motor, slide tracks and rollers, all of which can increase the cost.
In comparison, swing gates only require a motor and a few hinges that are mounted to walls or posts, making them generally cheaper than sliding gates.
Space
Another important thing to consider is where you want the gate to be installed and the amount of space available.
Swing gates require more room between the gate and where the cars wait to enter in order to allow the gates to open without hitting the vehicles. So if the amount of space is limited, sliding gates may be a more suitable option.
Maintenance
Finally, you should think about the maintenance required for each gate. As we mentioned above, sliding gates have more components, which means maintenance is more complex and therefore more expensive.
Swing gates on the other hand, require very little maintenance, and there are fewer parts at risk of breaking or becoming jammed.
So if a low-maintenance option is something you’re looking for, swing gates may be the better choice for your business.
